Why Are Candle Brands Switching to Tins?
Key Takeaways
- More candle makers are pouring into metal tins alongside, or instead of, glass jars.
- A 250ml tin weighs about a quarter of a similar glass jar. That means lighter parcels and far fewer breakages in the post.
- Tins are made from tinplate, which is steel. Steel is one of the most widely recycled packaging materials in the UK and Europe.
- Glass still wins for big statement candles and coloured wax. Many brands now use both.
- Browse our candle tins, or get in touch and we'll help you choose the right container for your candles.

Why Are Candle Brands Switching to Tins?
Glass has been the default for scented candles for years.
That's changing.
Walk round a craft fair or scroll through a candle brand's shop and you'll see more and more tins. Travel candles. Gift sets. Whole ranges poured into gold, black and silver metal.
It isn't a fashion thing. The reasons are practical. Tins are lighter, they don't break in the post, they recycle well and they open up products that glass can't do.
Here's what's driving the switch, where glass still earns its place, and how to choose the right tin.
How Much Lighter Is a Tin Than a Glass Jar?
A lot lighter.
Our 100ml candle tin weighs around 36g. A 250ml tin weighs around 68g. Glass candle jars of a similar size usually weigh between 190g and 480g empty, depending on how thick the walls are.
| Container | Capacity | Empty weight |
|---|---|---|
| Tinplate candle tin | 100ml | approx. 36g |
| Tinplate candle tin | 250ml | approx. 68g |
| Glass candle jar | 210ml | 189g |
| Glass candle jar | 250ml | 270g |
| Thick-walled glass candle jar | 200ml | 296g |
Glass weights are as listed by each supplier. Tin weights are approximate.
Weight comes off every parcel. A lighter candle is more likely to stay in a cheaper postage band, and a box that held two glass jars can often hold three or four tins.

View productWhy Do Tins Survive the Post Better?
Because they don't break.
Ask any candle maker who sells online about breakages. A cracked jar means a refund, a replacement, a second lot of postage and an unhappy customer. Sometimes a bad review as well.
Glass jars need careful packing. Several layers of bubble wrap. Dividers so jars never touch each other. A box with room for padding on every side.
Tins need far less.
A dropped tin might pick up a small dent. It won't shatter, and it won't spill wax through a parcel. That means quicker packing, smaller boxes and fewer refunds.

The thin silver line on each tin is the welded seam.
Are Candle Tins Better for Recycling?
They recycle very well.
Candle tins are made from tinplate. That's steel with a thin coating of tin. Steel can be melted down and made into new steel again and again without losing quality. It's also easy to sort, because magnets pull it out of mixed recycling.
The numbers back this up.
- UK. Packaging steel reached a 77.1% recycling rate in 2022.
- Europe. Steel was the most recycled sales packaging material in 2022, at 80.5%.
- Germany. 94.3% of household tinplate was recycled in 2024.
Glass is recyclable too, so this isn't a case against glass. But an empty tin is small, light and has a lid, so plenty of customers keep it for pins, balms or loose tea. Reuse is even better than recycling.
Do Tins Cost Less in Packaging Fees?
Often, yes, because the UK now charges packaging fees by weight.
Under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging, producers pay a fee for every tonne of packaging they sell. The 2025 to 2026 base fees are £192 a tonne for glass and £259 a tonne for steel.
Steel costs more per tonne. But tins weigh so much less that they usually come out cheaper per candle.
| 250ml container | Weight | Fee per tonne | Fee per 10,000 units |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glass jar | 270g | £192 | approx. £518 |
| Tinplate tin | 68g | £259 | approx. £176 |
2025 to 2026 EPR base fees. Weights from the table above.
That's a worked example. Your own figures will depend on the containers you use. From 2026 to 2027, fees also depend on how recyclable the packaging is.
EPR fees only apply to larger producers, so most small candle makers won't pay them directly. But if you're growing, the weight of your packaging is now a real cost.

Gold Round Welded Side Seam Tin 100ml
A warm gold 100ml tin that looks the part in Christmas gift sets and discovery boxes.
View productWhat Can You Make With Tins That Glass Can't Do?
Tins open up whole new products.
- Travel candles. A lidded tin goes in a suitcase or handbag without any worry about breakage.
- Gift sets and discovery boxes. Small tins sit neatly side by side, so three or four scents fit in one slim box.
- Samples and testers. A 100ml tin is cheap enough to let customers try a new scent before buying a full-size jar.
- Seasonal and limited editions. Gold and black tins look premium with nothing more than a simple label.
The lid earns its keep too. It keeps dust off the wax, holds the fragrance in between burns and makes the candle look finished on the shelf.
Christmas is the big one. If you're planning gift sets, order your tins early so you have time to pour, cure and label.

Tins still look premium on the shelf.
When Is Glass Still the Better Choice?
Tins aren't right for every candle.
- Seeing the wax. Glass shows off coloured wax, layers and the glow of the flame. A tin hides all of that.
- A luxury feel. A heavy glass jar feels substantial in the hand, and many customers link that weight with a higher price.
- Large and multi-wick candles. Big statement candles and three-wick designs usually suit thick glass better.
- Hot surfaces. A burning tin gets hot to the touch. Tell customers to stand it on a heat-resistant surface, and put that on your safety label.
So many brands do both. Glass for the hero candle. Tins for travel sizes, samples and gift sets.
Our candle glass range sits alongside our tins, so you can build both from one order.
Tins vs Glass: How Do They Compare?
Here's the quick version.
| Candle tins | Glass candle jars | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Very light | Several times heavier |
| In the post | Won't shatter, light padding | Needs bubble wrap and dividers |
| Shows the wax | No | Yes |
| Feel in the hand | Light and practical | Heavy and luxurious |
| Lid | Slip lid included | Usually bought separately |
| Recycling | Steel, widely recycled | Glass, widely recycled |
| Best for | Travel candles, samples, gift sets | Hero candles, multi-wick, coloured wax |
Most brands don't have to choose. Use each one where it works best.
How Do You Choose the Right Candle Tin?
Four things matter most.
- The seam. A welded side seam holds hot wax better than a folded seam. On coloured tins you'll see a thin silver line along the weld. That's normal.
- The size. A 100ml tin holds around 90g of wax. That suits travel candles, samples and gift sets. Go bigger for a main-range candle.
- The lacquer. A food-safe lacquer protects the inside of the tin, and means customers can reuse it for food storage afterwards.
- The lid. A slip lid keeps fragrance in and lets tins stack neatly on display.
Then test. Pour a few candles, let them cure and burn them properly to settle your wick size and fill line before you order in volume.

Wick and test a few tins before you scale up.
The Bottom Line
Candle brands aren't switching to tins because they're cheap. They're switching because tins work.
They're lighter to post. They don't break. They recycle well. And they make travel candles, samples and gift sets easy.
Glass still has its place for big statement candles. But for everything else, a tin is well worth testing.
Our 100ml gold and black tins have welded seams, slip lids and a food-safe lacquer, and you can buy them singly for testing. Browse our candle tins and candle glass, or contact us and tell us what you're making.
FAQs
Are candle tins safe for candles?
Yes, when you use tins made for candles. A welded seam stops hot wax seeping out. Tins get hot when the candle is lit, so customers should place them on a heat-resistant surface.
How much wax does a 100ml candle tin hold?
Around 90g, depending on your wax and how full you fill it. Do a test pour with your own wax before you print labels.
Are tins more eco-friendly than glass jars?
Both recycle well. Tins are much lighter, which cuts the weight of every parcel, and steel is one of the most recycled packaging materials in the UK and Europe.
Why is there a silver line on my coloured tin?
That's the welded side seam. Welding leaves a thin line in the coating. It's a normal sign of the process and doesn't affect how the tin works.
Can I buy candle tins singly?
Yes. You can buy single tins to test your wax and wick, then come back for your production run. Contact us if you need larger quantities.
