How Do You Choose the Right Amber Glass Bottles?

Key Takeaways

  • Amber glass filters out much of the ultraviolet and blue light that can spoil light-sensitive oils, extracts and serums.
  • The bottle style follows the product: dropper bottles for oils and serums, Boston rounds for tinctures and lotions, Alpha bottles for larger fills and refills.
  • Choose the closure as carefully as the glass. Droppers, pumps, sprays and screw caps all change how your product is used.
  • Closures have to match the bottle's neck, so use the Add Compatible Item section on each bottle's product page to find the ones that fit.
  • Coming soon: amber glass Derma square bottles for skincare, and lightweight amber PET Alpha bottles where breakage or postage weight matters.
  • Browse our Alpha bottles and dropper bottles, or get in touch and we'll help you choose.

How Do You Choose the Right Amber Glass Bottles?

Amber glass is everywhere.

Walk into any natural beauty shop or pharmacy and you'll see rows of that warm brown glass.

There's a good reason for it. Amber glass protects what's inside from light, it looks honest and natural, and it suits almost any brand.

But "amber glass bottle" covers a lot of different bottles.

A 10ml dropper and a 1 litre refill bottle have very little in common. Choosing well comes down to four things: why you need amber in the first place, the bottle style, the size and the closure. This guide walks through each one.

Why Do Brands Choose Amber Glass?

Mostly for protection.

Many natural products are sensitive to light. Essential oils, plant extracts, vitamins and some active skincare ingredients can break down faster when they're left in bright light. That can change the scent, the colour or how well the product works.

Amber glass filters out much of the ultraviolet and blue light that does the damage. Clear glass lets most of it straight through.

That's why amber is the default for so many oils and remedies.

There are other reasons too:

  • It's inert. Glass doesn't react with oils, alcohol or acids, so it won't take on smells or change the formula.
  • It looks the part. Amber says natural, apothecary and carefully made. Customers recognise it straight away.
  • It's widely recycled. Glass bottles go in household recycling across the UK, and plenty of customers reuse them.

Amber isn't a magic shield, though. It still helps to store products away from direct sunlight and heat. Our guide to amber vs clear glass goes into more detail.

Which Amber Bottle Style Suits Your Product?

Start with how your customer will use it.

A product used in drops needs a different bottle from one that's poured, pumped or sprayed.

Dropper bottles

Small, round bottles made for essential oils, facial oils, serums and tinctures. They usually take a pipette or a dripper cap, so customers can use a few drops at a time.

If your product is precious, strong or used sparingly, this is where to start.

Boston round bottles

A rounded shoulder and a sturdy, classic shape. Boston rounds are popular for tinctures, massage oils, toners and lotions. They take a wide choice of closures, so one bottle can work across several products in a range.

Alpha bottles

Tall, slim bottles with straight sides and a lot of label space. Alpha bottles come in a wide size range, from small bottles for samples up to large bottles for refills.

They're a natural fit for shampoos, body washes, hand soaps, cleaning sprays and refill stations. Add a pump or a trigger spray and you have a reusable bottle customers will keep on the side.

Square bottles

Flat faces and defined shoulders. Square bottles give you a clean, flat panel for labels and stand out on a shelf of round bottles. Our new amber glass Derma square bottles are coming soon, in sizes from 30ml to 150ml for creams, serums and oils.

Rollette bottles

Small bottles with a roller ball fitting, made for perfume oils and roll-on blends. Customers apply the product straight to the skin, with no mess and no measuring.

Not sure which style fits? Our Dropper Bottle Guide and Cosmetic Glass Guide show the main options side by side.

What Size Amber Bottle Do You Need?

Think about how long one bottle should last.

Concentrated products are used a few drops at a time. Shampoo and hand wash go much faster, so they need a bigger bottle.

As a rough guide:

  • Small (around 3ml to 15ml). Essential oils, samples, travel sizes and roll-on blends.
  • Medium (around 30ml to 100ml). Serums, face and beard oils, tinctures and retail-sized remedies.
  • Large (around 150ml to 300ml). Massage oils, toners, shampoos, body washes and hand soaps.
  • Refill sizes (500ml to 1 litre). Refills, salon and spa sizes, and cleaning concentrates.

Then test it.

A bottle's capacity is usually measured to the brim. Once you add a dropper, pump or cap, and leave a little headspace, the amount you can fill is less. Fill a sample with your real product before you print labels.

Which Closure Should You Use on an Amber Bottle?

The closure is half the product.

  • Pipettes and droppers. For oils, serums and tinctures used a few drops at a time.
  • Dripper caps. A cap with a built-in dripper insert, common on essential oils. Customers tip the bottle and count the drops.
  • Lotion pumps. For lotions, hand soaps, body washes and shampoos.
  • Mist and trigger sprays. For toners, room sprays, hair mists and cleaning products.
  • Screw caps. Simple and secure for refills, concentrates and products that are poured.

And the closure has to match the neck.

Bottles that look alike can have different neck sizes, and a closure that nearly fits won't seal properly. So don't guess. Open the bottle's product page and look for the Add Compatible Item section. It shows the closures made to fit that bottle, so you can add them to the same order.

Our Closures & Components Guide explains each closure type in more detail.

Are Amber Bottles Good for Refills and Home Care?

Yes. And it's a growing use.

More customers want a bottle they can keep and refill, rather than a new plastic one every few weeks. A sturdy amber glass bottle with a good pump or trigger spray looks smart on a kitchen worktop or bathroom shelf, and it lasts.

It works for brands too.

  • Sell the bottle once. Offer a glass "forever bottle" with your first order, then sell refills.
  • Go big on refills. A 500ml or 1 litre bottle suits refill pouches, salon backbars and refill stations.
  • Keep the look consistent. The same amber Alpha bottle in several sizes makes a range look like a brand.

If you're working with strong cleaning chemicals, check the closure's details suit your formula before you order in volume. If you're not sure, ask us.

When Should You Choose Violet Glass Instead?

When light protection matters most.

Amber filters out much of the damaging light, but not all of it. For premium and very light-sensitive products, some brands choose Miron violet glass instead. It takes a different approach to light protection and is used for high-end oils, CBD, supplements and skincare.

As the UK's official distributor of Miron violet glass, we stock a full range of bottles, jars and closures. Our article on why amber glass is not enough for CBD oil explains the difference, or browse our Miron violet glass bottles and jars.

For most oils, tinctures and everyday products, amber is a reliable, cost-effective choice.

What Should You Check Before Ordering Amber Bottles in Bulk?

Sample first. Then scale.

  • Test with your real product. Check the fill level, how the closure performs and how the bottle feels in the hand.
  • Check your labels. Measure the flat label area on a real sample before you print.
  • Order closures with the bottles. A pallet of bottles with no pumps is a frustrating way to lose a week.

The Bottom Line

Amber glass is popular for a reason. It protects light-sensitive products, it looks natural and it suits almost any brand.

Choose the style by how the product is used. Choose the size by how long one bottle should last. Then pick a closure that makes the product easy to use, and test it all with your real formula before you scale up.

Closures must match the bottle, so use the Add Compatible Item section on each bottle's product page to see the ones that fit. You can also browse our dropper bottles and sprays and pumps, read our Dropper Bottle Guide, or contact us and tell us what you're making.

FAQs

Does amber glass block UV light?

Amber glass filters out much of the ultraviolet and blue light that can spoil light-sensitive products, which is why it's widely used for oils and extracts. It doesn't block all light, so it still helps to store products away from direct sunlight.

What are amber glass bottles used for?

Essential oils, serums, tinctures, beard and hair oils, massage oils, toners, soaps, shampoos and cleaning products. Anything that benefits from some protection from light, or simply suits a natural, apothecary look.

What size amber bottle is best for essential oils?

Essential oils are usually sold in small bottles of around 5ml to 30ml with a dripper cap or pipette. Larger sizes suit blends and carrier oils that are used more generously.

Do your amber bottles come with caps?

Check each product page to see what's included. Closures are generally listed separately so you can choose the dropper, pump, spray or cap you want. Use the Add Compatible Item section on the bottle's product page to add closures that fit.

Is amber or violet glass better?

Amber is a reliable, cost-effective choice for most oils and everyday products. Miron violet glass is a premium option chosen by brands that want a different level of light protection. Contact us if you'd like help deciding.

Do you sell amber plastic bottles?

Yes, soon. Our amber PET Alpha bottles in 60ml, 200ml, 250ml and 300ml are listed now, with stock on the way. They're lighter than glass and shatter-resistant, so they suit products that are posted or used where breakage is a risk. See the range.

Can I buy amber glass bottles in bulk?

Yes. You can order a small quantity to test, then buy in volume once you're happy. Larger quantities are also available through our buy by pallet range.
